Groundsource Drilling for Social Housing Project

Ground Source Heat Borehole  Drilling in Cornwall

Aquasource (SW) Ltd t/a Groundsource SW have started work on a 12 hole Ground Source Heat Pump drilling project for  a local Ground Source Heat Pump installer in South West Cornwall.

The site is in a Cul-de-Sac surrounded by dwellings and we are working hard to minimise mess and disruption to the tenants. All working areas are being sheeted down with plywood and separation membranes and all arising are being taken offsite.

The Ground Source holes are being drilled to a maximum depth of 103m and on completion will be fitted with Geothermal probes and backfilled using special thermally conductive grout.

When completed the tenants on the site will be able to take advantage of  clean, cheap and easily controllable heat from the Cornish bedrock.

Aquasource (SW) Ltd t/a Ground Source South West has started a Ground Source Heat Pump project on the Lizard Peninsular.

The project involves drilling up to 120m deep boreholes in the very small front gardens of social properties on an estate.

The access is very tight and we were just able to squeeze our Beretta T46 into the space available.

Tidyness and site cleanliness is paramount with all dirty water being tankered off site and the ground covered in tarpaulins and plywood to protect it from the drilling operations.

The ground is a very hard granite type rock with clay bands.

Groundsource Boreholes completed for local company.

Aquasource (SW) Ltd have successfully completed 1280m of groundsource heat pump boreholes on one site for a local company at a project near Wadebridge in Cornwall.

The ‘down the hole hammer’ drilling technique was used to drill the holes.

The borehole comprise 10 number, 127mm diameter holes drilled to a depth of 120m.

There was also a requirement for an additional 80m hole for a separate system on site.

Because a design life of 25+ years was required  crack resistant polyethylene Geothermal probes were inserted into the holes.

To ensure maximum performance the boreholes were backfilled with thermally conductive material.

Header Pipework for Groundsource.

The  required header pipe linkup will also be carried out by Aquasource (SW) Ltd. 

This will involve the installation of an underground groundsource chamber manifold and all pipework needed to connect the boreholes to the manifold and from the manifold to the property.

All pipework will be joined using electrofusion techniques and pressure tested on completion.

Nice Day for Groundsource Drilling

Aquasource (SW) Ltd t/a Groundsource South West has completed two new Groundsource boreholes for a client on the Lizard peninsular.

As you can see the weather was outstanding.

The holes were fitted with 32mm groundsource probes, pressure tested and grouted on completion.

We will then install a two way manifold and connect the boreholes back to the Ground Source Heat Pump.

Ground Source Heat Pump Boreholes in Newquay

Aquasource (SW) Ltd t/a Groundsource South West have completed 10 boreholes for Ground Source Heat Pumps at a new housing site in Newquay. The  use of Ground Source Heat Pumps will enable the  properties  to be Zero Carbon Homes.

Geothermal hole details.

Due to expected ground conditions drilling technique used for the Ground Source Holes was down the hole percussion. This technique  enables holes to be drilled through hard solid rock.

The Ground Source holes were drilled to a depth of 85m, probe inserted and grouted with Geothermal Grout from the bottom up.

The Geothermal grout seals the holes, provides good heat transfer from the ground to the probes and  prevents contamination of the ground water by dirty surface water. Bottom up grouting ensures that the holes are filled completely with no gaps that may prevent efficient thermal transfer. This can be due to partial hole filling and is to be avoided if possible.


Ground Conditions

The holes were completed despite some very challenging ground conditions which tested the ingenuity of our drillers to the limit!

This was because a near horizontal layer of soft clay needed to be overcome to enable the successful insertion of the Ground Source Geothermal Probes.

Consequently all the holes  were cased through  the clay zone into the stronger rock below.

The amount of water encountered during the drilling also posed problems for the drillers.

The wetness of the holes however is good news for the performance of the Ground Source Heat Pump system.
